Formation and early years (19851987)

Dream Theater was formed in September 1985 when guitarist John Petrucci and bassist John Myung decided to form a band in their spare time while studying at the Berklee College of Music. The pair came across drummer Mike Portnoy in one of Berklee’s rehearsal rooms, where he was asked to join the band. The trio started off by covering Rush and Iron Maiden songs in the rehearsal rooms at Berklee.

Myung, Petrucci, and Portnoy settled on the name Majesty for their newly formed group. According to the The Score So Far… documentary, they were waiting in line for tickets to a Rush concert at the Berklee Performance Center while listening to the band on a boom box. Portnoy commented that the ending of the song “Bastille Day” (from the album Caress of Steel) sounded “majestic”. It was then decided

I moved to Texas in 1993 from Arizona.  I went from Very, Very Hot, to Very Hot, but the area was growing and jobs were plenty.  I first visited Frisco, Texas in 1994.  There wasn’t much there, except a McDonald’s, La Hacienda Ranch, and a Ford Dealership.  However for some reason Frisco felt like home.  After moving from one job to another I finally got close enough in 1997 to make the move to Frisco. 

That was 12 years ago, and many great memories later.  First we had all the new schools, then the retail industry came.  In 1999 they spoke of a mall, that mall would be Stonebriar Center, with 160 high-end stores.  Along with Stonebriar Mall other stores came and a plethora of restaurants.  Soon, we saw a great ‘AA’ Baseball facility come in, and then the Dallas, Stars built a training facility with it’s minor league team playing games here.
